The Inner Man
God created man in His own image.
Since God is Spirit, man’s true identity is also spiritual in nature.
To this spirit, God gave free will, along with the faculties of mind, will, and emotions—forming the soul.
God also clothed man’s spirit with a physical body.
Because Scripture says that man was created in the image and likeness of God, and since God exists as a Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—man too was created as a triune being: spirit, soul, and body.
The body is the outer man.
The spirit is the inner man.
The soul exists between the spirit and the body, serving as the bridge between the two.
Through the body, humans interact with the physical world using the five senses.
Through the soul, humans engage the intellectual, emotional, and volitional realms.
Through the spirit, humans commune with the spiritual realm and with God Himself.
